VanderHoeven scores OT winner, Tradesmen split series with St. Louis

Nov 1, 2020

Oregon Tradesmen traveled south to Wentzville for a weekend series against the St. Louis Jr. Blues. Two tightly contested games saw both teams earn a victory and keep pace in the NA3HL Central Division.

The host Jr. Blues drew first blood in the Saturday opener taking a 5-3 win. Jeb Lindy made 27 saves in net for the home team who scored a pair of goals in the first and third periods.

Trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes the Tradesmen struck quickly to begin the second on shorthanded tallies by Dylan Dent and Parker Severson.

St. Louis would restore their two-goal advantage midway through the third before Jacob Best scored to make it 4-3. An empty net goal with 1:09 remaining sealed the victory for the Blues.

The Sunday matinee began similar to the previous game with St. Louis taking a 1-0 lead early in the second frame. Severson continued his scoring prowless with a pair of goals – his sixth and seventh of the season – to help the Tradesmen to their first lead of the weekend.

Eli Bowers made his debut in net for Oregon stopping 24 of 26 shots faced. Both goals against were scored by Joey Solimando, who tied the game with 14:12 to play in regulation.

Despite both teams having scoring opportunities, including a Tradesmen shot that rang off the goal post in the final minute, the game would need overtime to find a winner.

That winning goal came at 2:02 of overtime when Sam VanderHoeven punched the puck in the net to secure the two points in the standings and a happy bus ride back to Oregon.

Oregon Tradesmen (5-2-0-0) return to action next weekend with a showdown at the first place Rochester Grizzlies (6-0-0-0).
